Teeth

This Science Minute was researched and written by Siena S., of Ithaca, NY.

Have you ever wondered what the inside of a tooth is like?

On the outside of the tooth, there is enamel. It's said to be the second hardest substance in the world! Diamond is ranked 10 on the mineral scale, but tooth enamel is almost as hard with a rank of 9.5.

Below enamel is dentin, another hard substance.

The enamel and dentin protect the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth. The pulp is so heavily protected because it's the most important part. The pulp holds the nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive and healthy.

Finally, the cementum holds the tooth to the jawbone.

That's a lot of parts! Next time you brush your teeth, keep these facts in mind. The tooth isn't just a bone.
