Nature's Water Towers
This Science Minute was researched and written by Liam S., of Ithaca, NY.
When I say that I spent six weeks in a cloud forest, most people don't know what I'm talking about! Although few people know about cloud forests, these important ecosystems require our attention.
Cloud forests are special rain forests that occur at high altitudes. These forests are often shrouded in clouds and get a high percentage of their water from mist. Cloud forests produce billions of gallons of fresh clean water, and provide habitats for thousands of plants and animals.
Cloud forests are in danger, due to global warming, deforestation, and over-population. During my visit to a cloud forest reserve in Ecuador, I learned that these rare and important habitats can be preserved if governments and environmental organizations work together.
